Updating the week of Feb. 18 - Feb. 22:
Reading
In reading we read a story in our anthology entitled, Signs All Around Us and talked about how we can now read all different kinds of signs everywhere we go. We continued to work on the skill of questioning while we are reading - asking questions helps us to understand what we are reading.
Writing
For word work, we have been working more on conventions, specifically kinds of sentences, making sure we remember to check for capital letters where needed, and checking for correct punctuation.
Math
The students in 2C have just finished Unit 8 which covered fractions. This was a very challenging unit, and the students worked very hard in class and at home. We will begin Unit 9 next week and explore measurement.

Updating the week of Feb. 4 - Feb. 8:
Reading
In reading we continue to work on comprehension and specifically how to find the meaning of a word using context clues. We are also studying character and what makes a character interesting in a story including the character's words, actions, and personality traits. The students can deepen their comprehension of a story by making personal connections to the many aspects that make the character interesting.
Writing
We continue to work on sentence structure, both simple and complex sentences. The kids are learning to expand their sentences by adding detail (telling more).
Math
The students in 2C continue to work through Unit 8 which covers fractions. They are learning that fractions represent part of a whole as well as the vocabulary of fractions - numerator and denominator. We are also working on Xtra Math for our math facts practice. The students have done very well with this web-based iPad program.
News and Notes
- Thanks to all who sent in box tops for our fund-raising efforts. Second grade has sent in more than 2,500 box tops. WOW!
- Fun Fair is coming! Save the date of March 1st for fun at the AGS Fun Fair!
2C Chronicle #6
Updating the weeks of December 10th-December 21st:
Reading
We have been working on fact vs. opinion. We have also learned that a character's words and actions in a story help the reader to make predictions about the story and make inferences about the character's personality. We are striving to improve our reading comprehension by using context clues to help us understand the meaning of words that are unfamiliar. Please make sure your child reads over the holiday break! Thanks so much!
Writing
We practiced writing responses to nonfiction text. This includes referring to sources in their responses. The students have to provide evidence from the text to support their answers. We also have written letters to snow - of all things! These letters can be found on the west hallway bulletin board under the caption, "Dear Snow". Check them out if you have a chance!
Math
We have completed Unit 5 which covered geometry and are now working in Unit 6 which deals with estimation skills as well as subtraction stories. We will finish Unit 6 after break. The kids also counted the money donated for our service project. It was a team effort!
News and Notes:
- In the spirit of the season of giving, the second graders of 2C raised $98.11 for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry. The second grade as a whole raised $347.90 to help feed those who are hungry this holiday season and beyond. Thank you so much for your generosity!
- The holiday party will take place on Friday.
- Have a wonderful and restful holiday break. Thank you so much for all your help, kindness, and support!

Updating the week of October 29th-November 2nd:
Reading
This week we continued with Unit 6. We worked on asking questions that help us understand the text. We also focused on text features, including how the text on the page is formatted, speech bubbles, picture frames and text boxes with important vocabulary, and the role they play in reading a story. We threw in a couple of Halloween stories this week for good measure!
Writing
Our focus this week was on conventions. The kids practiced editing for proper punctuation and capitalization of proper nouns and words that begin sentences.
Math
We are well into Unit 4! This week we covered processes including addition and subtraction of one and two digit numbers. The students used these skills to purchase items from advertisements in their Student Resource Books and make change for the items bought.

Updating the week of September 24th through September 28th.
We had an excellent first week of fall in 2C! The students in 2C are very exited about the change of seasons, and all of the activities that go along with it.
Reading
Our readers are really getting into the new reading series - Journeys. We continue to work in small guided reading groups. We also worked hard on our weekly target skills - multiple meaning words, authors purpose and more about parts of a story. We continue to work on Read to Self and Read to Someone during our reading time each day. These two features are very important to readers confidence and consistent reading improvement.
Writing
Our writing is moving right along as we work on our conventions (what are conventions anyway?), writing stamina, and the difference between a statement and a question. We are also really focusing on the printing itself - how we make our letters, words and sentences. The students in 2C are really trying to take their time with their printing.
Math
We are marching right on through unit two in math. Number stories involving subtraction, fact families, and using scales and weighing items are some of the lessons we have covered this week. Thanks for working on and returning the Home Link pages, these concepts can be challenging for our students and review at home makes a huge difference.
Social Studies
We just finished our chapter two assessment, and we finished our Urban, Suburban, and Rural posters this week. Our 2C students did a great job with this chapter - I will try to post some photos of their posters on our blog next week. We started chapter three on Friday and we will have a lot of fun learning about maps in this chapter.
